Check eSIM compatibility

The two checks that matter

First, the phone needs eSIM hardware and software. Second, it must accept a plan from a provider other than the network that originally sold it. Passing only one check is not enough.

• Compatibility can differ by country, sales channel and model number.
• A dual-SIM tray does not automatically mean the phone supports eSIM.
• A phone can show an EID and still be locked to its original provider.
• Tablets and watches may support eSIM but not ordinary phone travel plans.

Check an iPhone

1. 1Open Settings, General, then About.
2. 2Look for an EID. Its presence indicates that the device has eSIM hardware.
3. 3Find Network Provider Lock or Carrier Lock. “No SIM restrictions” means the iPhone is unlocked.
4. 4If the lock field shows a provider or restriction, contact the original provider. Apple cannot remove a provider lock.

Check a Google Pixel

1. 1Open Settings, Network & internet, then SIMs.
2. 2Look for Add SIM and Set up an eSIM.
3. 3Confirm the exact Pixel generation and where it was purchased. Early Pixel models have market- and provider-specific eSIM limitations.
4. 4Ask the original provider to confirm that the phone is unlocked if it was sold with a contract or network plan.

Check a Samsung Galaxy

1. 1Open Settings, Connections, then SIM manager.
2. 2Look for Add eSIM.
3. 3Open About phone and note the full model number, not only the Galaxy family name.
4. 4Check that model number against Samsung’s specifications for the country where the phone was sold.

Final check before purchase

• The Add eSIM control is visible in Settings.
• The device is unlocked for another provider.
• You can connect to Wi-Fi during installation.
• Your phone can retain your normal SIM alongside the travel eSIM if you need both.
• You understand whether the selected plan starts on installation or first connection.
