Activation timing
When to install and activate
Buy before departure, then let the plan’s activation rule decide when to install it. Some plans start on installation; others start only after the first supported network connection.

Buying, installing and activating are different
Buying creates your order. Installing downloads the eSIM profile to your phone. Activation starts the plan’s usable validity period. These events do not always happen at the same time.
The selected-plan summary on 1Locol states when validity starts. Read that field before installing; it takes priority over generic travel advice.
Understand the activation rule
| Rule shown on the plan | When the clock starts | Safer approach |
|---|---|---|
| First installation | When the eSIM is installed | Wait until close to departure unless the remaining validity comfortably covers the trip. |
| First network connection | When the eSIM first registers on a supported destination network | Install over reliable Wi-Fi before departure, but keep the travel line off until needed. |
A low-stress travel timeline
- 1Several days before departure: check compatibility and unlock status, then choose a plan that covers the whole trip.
- 2Before installing: open the order summary and confirm the activation rule and unused-installation deadline.
- 3If validity starts on first network connection: install over home Wi-Fi, label the line, and leave it switched off.
- 4If validity starts on installation: install only when the validity window can cover the trip, often shortly before departure or on arrival using trusted Wi-Fi.
- 5On arrival: turn on the travel line, select it for mobile data, enable roaming for that line and test with Wi-Fi off.
Avoid accidental early use
- Keep the travel line off until you are ready to use it.
- Do not choose it as the mobile-data line before the intended start time.
- Turn off automatic mobile-data switching to your home line.
- Keep home-line data roaming off unless your home provider explicitly includes it.
- Never test a destination-only plan by forcing manual networks at home.
If you left installation until arrival
Use trusted airport, hotel or personal hotspot Wi-Fi. Keep the QR code on a second device or use the manual activation details. Complete installation before leaving Wi-Fi, then test mobile data with Wi-Fi disabled.
